Solaris #1

Larry Koster

Magazine Sized Trade Paperback
Black & White
Page Count: 80

The story begins with a breaking news broadcast announcing that sudden shifts in magnetic and radioactive forces have caused an extreme interaction between the Sun and Moon. This new and unexpected alignment will create a solar eclipse unprecedented in modern history. At the time of the report, it is not known what kind of effect this interaction will have on the Earth although speculation within the scientific community believes the consequences will not be too dire. It is also learned from the news report that a group of scientists, from the Cass-Barbara Observatory has long asserted that within the Sun”s core is the Center City home to an interplanetary communications center whose signals communicate with moons, planets and stars in our own as well as other solar systems. As the moon moves to block out the sun, Mother Sun and Father Moon use this unique opportunity to create their own child who morphs into human form as he arises out of the dust in the sun”s center city. The character, Solaris, derives his powers from his creators the Earth”s sun and moon from which he metabolizes sunlight and lunar radiation, Solaris is guided by his mother”s conscience, and receives telepathic instructions from her. Solaris” first mission is on the planet Lightan where volcanic eruptions have caused fissures in the planet”s crust enabling the release of creatures that for centuries lived beneath the surface. With new ground to conquer, the Dirtons embark on a mission to take over planet. On his arrival to Lightan Solaris discovers that soot from the volcanoes have blocked his power source, Lightan”s sun, impairing his abilities and rendering him helpless. The Dirtrons, having discovered Solaris” prescence, decide to leave him as fodder for the planet”s carrion Fangbirds. However, when the birds move in to dispatch Solaris, they disrupt the veil of dust allowing Solaris to regain his powers. Solaris is able to come back from the brink to vanquish the Dirtrons by redirecting and smothering them volcanic lava and ash. With the Dirtrons cleaned-up, it”s on to Botonago to battle Fernatiara a giant pod whose spores are threatening the planet. Arising victorious from the battle on Botonago, Solaris receives a communication from Mother Sun informing him that the eclipse, which occurred in between the Sun, and the Earth”s moon caused temperature shift that cooled the planet too much. In order to save the planet Mother Sun and Father Moon quickly warmed the Earth”s surface but by mistake did so too much, which accelerated global warming. In the North Pole the rise in temperature allowed prehistoric animals, which had been embedded in the permafrost, to awaken and walk the earth. To make matters worse, the creatures, which had been exposed to centuries of pollution have mutated into horrifying life forms with devastating powers. Arriving on Earth, Solaris meets Professor Cass of the Cass-Barbara Observatory. Professor Cass informs Solaris that creatures have been spotted heading towards Anchorage, Alaska, and efforts to halt their advance have been in vain. After a couple of failed attempts Solaris finally vanquishes the mutant creature with a special weapon given to him by his parents. Later in the story, Solaris finds an unlikely partner, the Professor”s daughter Elaine Cass, who teams up with Solaris to defeat the last remaining creature threatening the Earth”s existence…. the Dragon Centipede. Elaine stirs feelings within Solaris, which he does not recognize, nor is he equipped to deal with. The tale takes Solaris to strange and distant planets to restore order wreaked by villainous monsters, cruel dictators, and revolutionary forces. Not all of the story”s intrigue is derived from intergalactic wars or mutant creatures. Professor Cass, the story”s supporting protagonist, faces his own challenges arising from colleagues whose jealousy and ambition leads to robbery, homicide and espionage.
