Very smart and VERY real, Liu & Piperberg breathe life into the superhero genre by focusing on the one non-powered being that matters most: a parent. The art is beautiful and the writing is sharp and direct. A great debut!

Well, done. Reminds me of the Lois & Clark show from a few years ago.

The real test of a comic book, I think, as far as whether it succeeds or it fails with the reader, is whether you enjoyed it, and whether the issue that you read makes you want to continue reading with the next issue.

For me, Issue #1 of Raising Dion succeeded on both counts, which in turn makes me count it as a successful comic book.

This comic book has solid art and solid coloring. There’s nothing amateur about the look of it, from those two perspectives. As for the lettering, it is on the subdued side. I think the comic book would have yielded more impact, when I read it, if the lettering were at the same level as the art and the coloring. As is, it’s legible, and it gets the job done, but it’s nothing to get excited about. Which is a shame, really, but even considered in this light, I still think that Issue #1 of Raising Dion proved to be a decent read.

There’s lots of talent that went into the making of this comic book. The special effects lettering, such that there is of it, is of a higher visual grade of quality than the standard lettering which runs the length of this comic. This issue isn’t heavy on special effects lettering, which means that it can’t carry the full load that the issue expects of it.

The story is solid. It’s interesting. In fairness, though, the art and the coloring provide the story a boost. Together, they help the story to retain the interest of the reader. The story was just getting good, when the issue ended, so that left me wanting more.

I’m not sold on the pink borders for the narrative boxes, but that’s a small bone to pick. I do think that they should have plastered Issue #1 on the front cover, somewhere. I only knew that it was Issue #1 by the IndyPlanet page declaring it to be so.

The very first panel of the actual story really grabbed my eye, and the coloring of that one scene really persuaded me that I needed to read this comic book. This issue was a free digital download, when I encountered it on IndyPlanet, but more than a few times, I have flipped part the front cover of a comic book that initially caught my eye, only to then just discard it, without even reading the story being presented. Where comic books are concerned, first impressions can be worth their weight in gold, to the prospective reader.

Being Issue #1 of this series, the storyline only progressed just so far, so would I be inclined to subscribe to this title, if a subscription to it were available? Honestly, I’m not sure. So, in that sense, Raising Dion hasn’t quite snagged me fully, just yet. But, all in all, I do give this issue two thumbs up.

Why just four stars, instead of five, as far as my rating of Issue #1 of Raising Dion is concerned?

I want more action, more literary oomph, if you will. The thing about stories in comic book form is that some stories simply take longer to get you to the very peak of your interest in the storyline, and Issue #1 just didn’t get me quite that far, yet.

That doesn’t mean that it isn’t a solid product, and likewise, it also doesn’t mean that you won’t enjoy it. I suspect that you will. You might even give it five stars. After all, others did.

This story is just gripping and genuine. I almost feel as though it would make a great tv series. First and foremost the character of the mother is just great. Seeing this from her eyes makes this story seem so real. I laughed when the boy said “make popcorn”. So funny. The story had a nice build up to when the couple saw the lights and then had the accident. I’m hooked. The pacing, draftsmanship and coloring were also wonderful. A great book.

I love a good story. And the tale of a powerful child destined for wondrous things, taken from the viewpoint of a caring, loving, and protective parent is pure genius. The parents do not often get the respect or credit they deserve, when it comes to how a superhero turns out. This first issue begins that journey, and does it in a real style that I can only imagine will be appreciated by a parent

Raising Dion 1 is a single issue by Dennis Liu and Jason Piperberg and can be found on indyplanet.com for free download or pay for print. I read the free download and want the print for my collection. The story of a mother raising a son with super powers. The first story delves just a touch into the kid Dion and his powers before going into the background of the parents through a journal flashback. It was a very good read and the art was so well done.
On October 4th Netflix will release a series based on this book. They must have seen something in the scripts of the future issues to want to go ahead on this because Daniel Liu’s writing knit together with Jason Piperberg’s art tell such an enticing story.
