This should be a five star review, but unfortunately this is one of the rare times when the author’s childish fears and paranoia that the straight-white-male-dominated status quo is being threatened has wormed its way into dismantling the integrity of the story. There are some absurd caricatures of “scary” militant feminists as well as characters spouting anti-trans rants in-story that the author has previously written word-for-word in one of their soapbox editorials (one must assume that if attending a party with the guy, you will be subjected at least once to “if I put on a rubber horse head, that doesn’t mean I’m a horse!” as if he’s hoping that the hundredth time he says it will recapture the thrill of the first time he said it and thought he’s said something clever.)
Minus all of the unnecessary gender politics, this is otherwise a very enjoyable story. If the slightly evocative cover doesn’t give it away (or the fact that the girl is dubbed “Robyn”), this is clearly going for something of a Batman Dark Knight Returns “older male mentor with young female sidekick” vibe. Again, there is a lot to like about this issue and both of the main characters are intriguing. Hopefully the second issue will stick to everything about this issue that works and leave the editorializing for the editorial page.
