Jayne Sinclair is a Summoner. Hers is the ability to summon the spirits of the recently deceased back to the mortal plane. Some spirits resist her call, but others are all too willing to return. Along with Detective Gage and his new partner Detective Finnegan, Jayne is called to investigate when the body of a child is found floating in a lake near a city park.

I really like what happens with the birds in this story. Gregory does a great job exploring nuances of grief, including the possibility that you can lose people again, which I found engaging. The purple robe is gorgeous. This is a very bright presentation of a topic that is often presented in shrouded darkness. I think that has the effect of making you approach the taboo topic with more patience, even bravery, as a reader.
